At Least Six Lose Their Lives in Crowd Crush at Ghanaian Military Recruitment Event
No fewer than six people have lost their lives during a crowd crush at a military recruitment gathering held in a sports arena in the West African nation.
The midweek "tragic" event appeared to have been triggered by "a sudden rush of candidates who overcame security measures and rushed into the entrances," announced a statement from the nation's military.
Twenty-two additional individuals were hurt, among them five who are in critical condition.
A large crowd had turned up at El-Wak stadium, in the main city, the capital, with the hope of joining the armed forces.
The country has a youth unemployment rate of about 32%, the latest official data indicate, and such enlistment drives normally attract massive gatherings and often result in disorderly situations.
The closing date to apply for this event was prolonged for a week to accommodate additional candidates, as a number had experienced challenges in the process.
Military representative Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin stated the stampede took place ahead of the event's scheduled start of 06:20 GMT.
The nation's leader President John Mahama has visited the wounded in hospital.
Order has been reestablished, and the enlistment process has since started.
