Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
