Right-leaning reactions to the limited disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's name and image appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise significant questions about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans immediately called for greater transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, enabled certain conservative figures to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly accused President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Issues Response
Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding these documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal forever. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a law mandating the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were given physical folders of files that included no previously unseen information.
