The Prince of Wales is scheduled to join the important UN climate summit in Brazil next month, however the prime minister's participation remains unconfirmed.
The Prince will introduce the Earthshot prize and attend the meeting of representatives from more than 190 nations in the Brazilian city.
Sustainability leaders praised the prince's involvement. One consultant stated that it would boost what is likely to be a challenging conference, where world consensus on new goals for lowering carbon emissions is essential.
"Is Prince William presence at the summit a publicity move? Certainly. But it doesn't imply it's a bad idea," the expert commented. "The summit has historically been as much about so-called 'optics' as it is about negotiations. Prince William's commitment will likely motivate other delegates to commit, and will capture worldwide attention."
"I believe HRH understands clearly that by attending, he'll bring numerous of viewers to the conference. In an era when environmental effects are growing, but media coverage is declining, any effort that raises awareness should be celebrated."
The monarch has been present at earlier Cops, but will not participate in Cop30.
A leader from a climate research unit remarked: "All hands on deck – and any high-profile figure like the Prince of Wales, in attendance assisting advocate for the challenging task that needs doing, is almost certainly a good thing."
"[King Charles was in his previous role when he went to the Glasgow summit and helped to motivate talks. I don't believe it necessarily requires the prince and the king to attend."
The UK's leader has not yet said if they plans to join the conference, to which every world leaders are asked, with many already confirmed. The leader was widely condemned by leading environmental voices for appearing to waver on the decision recently.
"International representatives must be in Belém for Cop30. Attendance is not merely symbolic, it is a test of leadership. This is the moment to establish enhanced national commitments and the funding to deliver them, especially for resilience" to the effects of the environmental emergency.
"The world is paying attention, and the future will record who was present."
