Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to contest specific rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
